Female Artists

By: Jose Alex Reyes

In honor of Women’s History Month, I wanted to showcase the talented women in the music industry that I listen to! But for a personal connection, I wanted to showcase the sad songs that I truly admire and wanting to share to others. I am someone who is very connected and moved by music and I wanted to share my top songs that showcase raw emotions of people hitting lows.

I. Yours By Alina Baraz

This song truly connected to me at a time where I hit rock bottom with feeling a connection towards people. Baraz sings  “I'm not yours and you're not mine” indicating that the people in the relationship are not in a relationship but the wild imagination of wanting the relationship to be real is sung throughout the whole track. The minimal production, the simple but powerful lyrics, and Baraz’s smooth vocals and harmonies truly does showcase heartbreak and empathy in the situation. By far one of my favorite songs in this entire world if I’m feeling down.

II. Around By Niki

This song honestly shatters me into pieces. While being released in 2018, I hadn’t listened to this song until 2020 after her debut album, Moonchild. The song starts off with the lyric of “You love me with your bones” indicating that the love being talked about in the song really is beautiful and holds significance in Niki’s life. With further research, the song is written about her mom who has passed away in her life and it just takes this song to another level. The lyrics truly being vulnerable and heartbreaking, a simple piano, and her powerful but yet calming vocals really do make the statement of a special love for our parents, specifically for your mom.

III. My Tears Ricochet By Taylor Swift

When Taylor Swift released her surprise eighth studio album, Folklore. I was intrigued instantly by the title of the fifth track, my tears ricochet. This song is one of Swift’s saddest songs. The haunting harmonies, soft but powerful piano, and the heartbreaking lyrics really creates a stand out track on folklore. The song is summarizing the end of a relationship and almost as the listener being at the funeral of said relationship. Truly sets the mood when you’re feeling down and feel all the emotions of a relationship which has reached its end.

IV. Someone New By Banks

I have started listening to Banks in 2019 and saw that this song was one of her most streamed songs and gave it a listen and really broke me into pieces. Someone New, Banks sings about not wanting to be replaced by her ex. These lyrics are very personal and ultimately relatable to people who have broken up with their significant other. Asking for time and wanting to still be in the relationship. The simplistic guitar playing the whole time but the raw vocals and personal lyrics is what truly makes the song a heartbreak.

V. New Heights By Ellie Goulding

Last but not least, New Heights by Ellie Goulding. Truly one of my favorites from her latest album, Brightest Blue. The song seems to be at the end of a relationship but also finding reassurance within yourself and being your own person. The production of the harmonies and the piano really builds throughout the song and showcases how grand and big it is in the bridge. This song is more about the growth within yourself than the significant other in your past relationship.

These are some of the saddest songs I have heard to this day and everyday I’m on a search to look for new sad songs that truly showcases growth and the high and lows in our lives. I created a playlist with sad songs that also have male artists but the majority of them are female artists that I truly do admire. Slow dance in the background and care for yourself.
